Hi! My name is Ren, and I am the artist behind Wired On A Whim
I started wire wrapping in 2018, and am self taught. I decided to figure out how to wrap crystals because I carry them with me daily and wanted a better spot than the non existent pockets that are typically found in women’s clothing. I picked up a spool of cheap wire from Michael’s and a relatively flat stone and started trying things.
Let’s start with a little about me. I have always been fascinated by rocks; I was the child who always came home with my pockets full of them. And of course, that meant once I discovered crystals, there was no going back. I have been a practicing witchcraft since I was 14 and do truly believe in how crystals can change your moods and energies to be more advantageous to your reality. (But I also think they are pretty - and if that’s all you think then that’s okay too).
I decided to officially open Wired On A Whim on Etsy in 2020 during the pandemic, but once life began to move after quarantine, I realized that my schedule did not allow all the time that Esty requires in order to be successful. From there I moved to Punk Rock Flea Markets and other pop-up shops around NJ. I focused on making hand wire wrapped pendants that were all unique. I believe that there are so many colors and flavors of jewelry out there. I wanted to make something unique, something that people could be proud to say that they were the only one who has that necklace. After all, jewelry should be as unique and special as the people who wear them.
In 2022, I made the decision to expand the shop to more than just handmade wire wrapped pendants. I have always been a crafty person and somewhere along the way I had learned how to make candles and studied herbalism along with purchased so. many. crystals. I had named my business Wired On A Whim because my favorite part of wire wrapping is that it is not always up to me how the pendant turns out, design is dictated by the whims of the stone and how I interpret them. And now my business also includes my whims of other things I want to make.
In 2023, I started the process to be officially diagnosed as autistic and fell into the world of fidgets. I have quite the collection of different types since they help me focus and be more productive. I realized that the options for more discrete or “adult” fidgets were extremely limited and started making wire wrapped fidget pendants. I wanted something I could use in a business meeting that would not draw too much attention or make me feel unprofessional. The customer feedback was phenomenal, and I decided to revamp the website and feel of my business to make these fidgets a more integral part of my shop.
I wanted this shop to be full of things that make me happy, so that it can hopefully make others happy too. And I realized if I had more types of products, I could make more people happy. So, I decided to follow my own whims too. I will make and share and include any whim that brings me joy. Thank you for coming to see my art and what I love to do.
